FAQS

  • Why have you changed the programme structure to specific 10-day residencies?

Based on our experience over the past three years of running the residencies, 10 days is the optimum time for artists, including ourselves to benefit.

  • Can I come on a residency outside the specific residency dates?

Unfortunately not in 2025.

  • Can I come for longer than the 10 days option?

Unfortunately not in 2025.

  • Can I come for fewer days?

Unfortunately not in 2025.

  • I have been to The Grange on a residency before, can I re-apply?

Yes, however your application will be considered alongside other applicants for the 2025 programme.

  • I don’t have a website or social media sites, what should I do?

We recommend you build a simple website or instagram account for the purpose of your application.

  • What do you mean by artists and creatives?

We are using these terms to embrace a variety of creative and artistic practice. This includes but is not exclusive and in no particular order: fine artists, sculptors, painters, sound artists, illustrators, designers, print-makers, potters, ceramicists, comics artists, graphic novelists, poets, writers, singers, musicians, clowns, film makers, dancers, curators, photographers, architects, weavers, textile artists, actors, performance artists.

  • What are you looking for in the proposal?

We are looking for the focus of your residency time here to be on a particular outcome, rather than a general continuation of your practice. This may be research and development or production of a project you are working on.

  • When will I know the outcome of my application?

All applications are acknowledged on receipt and will be reviewed after the submission deadline of 13 January 2025. All applicants will be notified of the outcome 3-7 February 2025. If you have not heard from us by 8 Feburary please email us.

  • If I’m not shortlisted will I receive feedback?

Unfortunately not in 2025. Our aim for 2025 is to curate appropriate groups of creatives that will complement each other's projects. Our motivation is to establish a critical dynamic at the heart of the residencies that all participants will benefit from, including us. If you are not shortlisted it is not a judgement on your practice or project per se, but is simply a reflection on the curatorial remit for 2025.

  • Why do I have to make a monetary contribution?

The Grange Projects is run on a not for profit basis (it is not a business) and we receive no public funding. All monetary contributions defray our costs delivering the In Residence programme. The project can only continue to run if we work on this together.

  • What is the difference between Pay What You Can and Pay What You Want or Feel?

Pay What You Can is non judgemental. The activity relies on a collaborative approach where kindness is at the centre. Our intention is that everyone can give and receive in the same spirit, in whatever form that takes. In order to ensure a rich diversity of participants we will rely on mutual support. Pay What You Want or Feel suggests a judgement on the quality of service or goods you receive. Whilst The Grange offers basic comfort, the real offer is the coming together of artists and creatives. The quality of this relies on all participants committing to the process and ethos.

  • What is the Suspended Coffee Campaign?

“A suspended coffee is the advance purchase of a cup of coffee for someone who needs it, no matter why”  www.suspendedcoffees.com

  • How do I decide how much I can pay?

We are leaving this entirely up to you. We trust your judgement. We will not ask for proof of your disposable income, but ask instead that you believe in the basic concept of Generosity and Reciprocity enabling you to be part of artist led creative activity that has benefit beyond the individual. The project can only continue to run if we work on this together.

  • What is the minimum amount of monetary contribution I could pay?

Since all your meals and board are included in your residency, in addition to the unique opportunity of receiving critical response to your project, we recommend you consider the amount you would usually spend on your weekly living costs as a guideline. For example this would include costs such as socialising and travel as well as groceries.

  • What is the £50 plus per night plus amount based on?

Having hosted over 150 artist residencies here at  The Grange since 2022 we've calculated that this is the minimum amount needed to cover our basic running costs during residencies.

  • Can I just pay the minimum suggested contribution?

Yes.

  • Can I pay more than the suggested contribution?

Yes, all extra contributions will be used to defray the costs of fellow artists.

  • Can I pay in instalments?

Yes, we ask for a non-refundable deposit of £75 which confirms your place. We ask for the balance to be fully paid one month before your visit.

  1. In one amount

  2. In two instalments

  3. In monthly payments set up as a standing order

We are happy to work out the system that suits you best

  • I’m applying for funding but won’t hear back before the application deadline, what should I do?

Submit your application, to us. If we offer you a residency session and you are reliant on your funding outcome to participate we would be unable to guarantee your place, but will add you to a reserve list until you are able to confirm your funding is in place.

  • What if I have mobility/health issues?

The Grange is an old building that imposes access restrictions, however we are keen to support everyone where possible. In your application form, please indicate any requirements you may have (in the any other information section at the end)

  • What if I’m accepted for a residency and something happens that means I cannot come after all?

We appreciate that life throws us the unpredictable from time to time and will be sympathetic to individual circumstances
